Doing business these past few years has been anything but usual. Over the last few years, we’ve had to adjust our ways of thinking, working, doing, and communicating. But that doesn’t mean we have to start from square one. We can adapt many of the tools already in our toolbox and make them work in our new environment. Consider email marketing as one of these crucial tools.

So that we’re all on the same page: let’s define email marketing. It is a powerful marketing tool that uses email to promote goods or services, while also developing relationships with customers. In other words: consider email marketing a form of “direct mail” using the internet.

Why would we want to use email as a marketing tool? Isn’t everyone on social media now? While it’s especially true that we’re spending more time using social messaging sites and apps these days, statistics show that the vast majority of us still rely on email communication. Over 90% of consumers check their email at least once a day, with Millennials and Gen Z accounting for 93% of email users. The majority of us check our email before we check in on our social media accounts.

Yes, email is important, but why make a bigger fuss about it now? Since 2020, we’ve seen a decline in organic website traffic across most industries, which is bad news for a lot of us. Email open and click rates, however, have increased, without a matching increase in sends. This tells us folks are turning to and relying on email communication for information and updates.

Let’s get more specific about the factors that make email marketing more effective than social media:

Email gives you direct access to your people

In the same way a friend welcomes you into their home, a customer invites you into their inbox when they opt into your mailing list. You don’t get in unless they grant you access. This means messages shared with them via email have a much greater chance of being seen than posts you share on social media, and being well-received.

People tend to trust email more than social media

With the increase in untrustworthy and questionable accounts on social media platforms, the direct relationships you form through your email marketing become even more valuable.

Email provides a respite from social media

Social media can provide useful real-time updates, but fatigue is real, y’all. Folks need a break from the 24-hour news and information cycle, and they also want ways to stay connected on their own schedules. Plus, email inboxes are chronological, not influenced or controlled by an algorithm. This means your message has a much greater chance of being read.

Engagement is more likely to increase

With the dramatic increase in remote work situations (not to mention the less-awesome fact of folks working fewer hours or not at all), we’re all spending a lot more time online. This increases chances of your emails being read, received, and hopefully acted upon.

Email creates a more direct connection

There are a few key factors that lead someone to open an email. They’re looking for help, some kind of assistance for a concern they have. If they don’t need something in the immediate future, they open emails from you because they know, like, and trust you, and they consider you a valuable resource. Building further on the know/like/trust aspect: you hear and see your people; the experience they have with you feels personal.

Now here’s the thing: you know and I know that we’re using our email marketing to stay top-of-mind with current and potential customers. We got bills to pay! That said: your email list isn’t just a list of buyers – they’re a list of flesh-and-blood people. Take time to serve them and acknowledge their needs rather than constantly selling to them. Developing that relationship will lead to increased sales and loyalty in the long run.

Meeting with a creative team marks an exciting time for a small business owner. You’re watching your business grow, and it feels like the right time to rebrand or upgrade your website. You may feel so inspired that you’re bursting at the seams with ideas to share. That’s great! Before you jump right into the fun stuff, it’s a good idea to be strategic with this first conversation. Here’s what to keep in mind to prepare for your consultation.

What’s in a Consultation?

A consultation is an excellent opportunity for you and your potential agency to get to know one another. A successful consultation allows both parties to learn about each other, clarify goals, and hopefully create a plan to work together.

While you may want to jump right into discussing the specifics of what you need, the creative team will benefit from understanding your business. Sharing a bit of your history and your mission will give your team a more accurate picture of who they’ll be working with.

What Makes You Unique?

You’ve chosen an agency likely because of their design expertise. They’ll want to know more about what you do, as well. Share details about your industry that may be relevant to the project. Include what sets you apart from your competitors. Let the team know why you’re the best at what you do!

Who Do You Serve?

If you already have distinct personas for your typical clients or customers, be sure to have that information handy. If you’re just getting started, think about who you’d ideally love to work with. Your agency may already have experience with that audience!

You’ve Got Goals, Yeah?

You’re ready to level up your business. You want better brand recognition, more bookings, or maybe it’s time to hire new staff. Your agency will want to know what you hope to get out of this collaboration, and why you chose them as a potential partner.

Your goals will also help the creative team determine the full scope of your project. New website functionalities and integrations can make doing business a lot easier, and thethe team should know what works best.

How Much Time Do You Have?

In order to ensure a successful collaboration, both parties must be crystal clear about timelines. Say you’ve got an event planned in your future. Do you need your new website launched before then? If so, be sure to bring this up during your consultation.

Something else to consider when thinking about timelines: feedback. You’ll need to factor in time on your end for reviewing mockups and drafts. Include ample time for sharing your feedback and reviewing revisions. Be as honest and upfront about your schedule.

Running your business is your priority, of course. Keep in mind, though: you’ll be working with another business whose priority is to deliver a top-notch project to you, their client. Use your consultation to get a sense of what’s expected of everyone involved.

But Really, What Do You Need?

As I mentioned earlier, you’ll be chatting with folks who are experts in their field. They’ll know all the bells and whistles necessary to bring your project to life. Ideally, your consultation will include a discussion of specific content and resource requirements. Make sure there is a clear understanding of who is responsible for each item. This will not only help your agency partner draft an accurate proposal, it will give you a better idea of what you may need to contribute.

This sounds like a lot to consider, huh? It can be… but finding the right team to bring your vision to life is worth the effort.

If you’ve got big marketing goals for your business, you know we’re ready to help! Jump on a consultation call with us to get started!
The post How To Prepare For A Consultation appeared first on Upswept Creative.

Let’s say you’ve just started a new business, and you’re next-level excited to get the word out about it. Or maybe you’ve been at it for a while, and you think your online presence could use a New Year’s refresh. Looks like you’re in the market for some design assistance!

A team like ours is ready to help, but good web designers can get it done better and faster if you have a good idea of what assistance you need.

Before you start vetting web designers or jumping on consult calls, let’s discuss how you can start outlining a smart plan for your website design.

What Exactly Do You Do?

If you’re thinking about a website, your initial thoughts might lean more towards design elements – colors, fonts, logos, et cetera. While these elements are certainly important (and we’ll get to them!), your offering should take center stage.

Start your design mission with clarity about who you are, what you offer, and who will benefit from this offering.

What Exactly Should Your Website Do?

Consider your website as your virtual storefront. If someone were to walk into your shop or office, what kind of experience would you want them to have? Would you make a great first impression if a potential customer had to wade through piles of boxes just to get to you? Probably not!

A physical storefront exists to feature what you’re selling, and make it easy to buy. From the customer’s perspective, they want a place where what they need is within reach and easy to find. Your online storefront should have the same intentions.

As you embark on your website design project, be clear about what you want your website to feature and how you want your potential customers to engage with you.

Put the “Fun” in “Functionality”

With your offering taking center stage, you should also think about how your new website can improve the experience you deliver to your client.

Having your contact information accessible and easy to find is an excellent start. Perhaps there could also be questions you can add to a contact form to speed up the onboarding process.

Can your website eliminate some extra steps for the customer as well? Functionalities like online scheduling or payment portals can help them start working with you quicker.

Online stores or e-commerce plugins can also improve the shopping experience if you’re selling products. Again: the goal is creating a clear path for your customer to get what they need.

Good Design Solves Problems!

Remember when I said we’d get to design elements earlier? Well, here we are! Smart, intentional design sets you apart from your competitors. A unique look or brand can also help attract your dream customers.

You may be thinking, “Geez, if design is so important, why’d you wait so long to bring it up?” If you’ve chosen a smart design team, their goal should be purpose-driven design. You want the look and feel of your website to support your mission and vision, and to guide your site visitors on a clear path through your site. Yes, the design should attract your ideal folks – but it’s your offering that should keep them engaged and interested.

All of this said: it definitely helps if you have at least a general idea of how you’d like things to look. If you already have a brand kit, complete with a logo and color palette, that’s a great start.

Maybe you’ve seen other websites that inspire you (or turn you off!). Sharing these with your design team can get the creative wheels turning. Don’t be shy about letting them know about your likes and dislikes!

If a new or refreshed website is one of your 2023 goals, you know we’re ready to help! If you want an assist mapping it all out, our website planner is the perfect tool to get that started. Or jump on a consultation call with us!
The post Map It Out: Smart Website Planning appeared first on Upswept Creative.

There comes a time in every small business owner’s life where she realizes she’d rather focus on delivering her offering, instead of stressing out about marketing and promotion. When that time comes, you have options! Folks like our fine team here at Upswept are happy to chat with you about making your online presence shine.

Something to consider, though: you’re inviting a designer or agency to be more than a service provider. You want someone who understands you, your audience, and your goals. You want a creative teammate.

Of course, we all remember the old adage, “There is no ‘I’ in ‘team.’” As much as you are hiring someone to provide a service, your provider will expect at least some collaboration so they can help you reach your goals. Here are a few tips to help you and your agency partner work better together.

What’s All This About “Teamwork”?!

You may be thinking, “If I hire an agency to design my logo/build my website/manage my social media presence, shouldn’t they be doing most of the work?” And you’d be right, for the most part! You hire someone for their specific expertise, which is likely outside of your own zone of genius.

Thing is, your agency isn’t in it to only show off their skills. Their zone of genius is using their years of technical experience to help YOU shine online. The only way they can make that happen is if they have a strong grasp on your goals. And the only way they’ll capture that is if you share the details, goals, and resources that are so vital to the project.

Know Your Values – And Theirs

We talk about values often here at Upswept. Making positive contributions to our community is important to us. We choose to partner with other small businesses and nonprofits with the same intentions, and we don’t shy away from these intentions in our own messaging.

How an agency carries itself online can tell you a lot about them. It will also give you an excellent idea of how they may express your ideals online. Take some time to scope out someone’s social media presence to get a better sense of their “voice” and their priorities. Make sure they fit with your own.

Skip the Culture Shock

Just as a creative provider has a set of values, they also have a certain vibe to who they are and what they do. Make sure your company culture matches theirs. You can appreciate someone’s design style or marketing brand voice, but their approach to the work should fit you well, too. For example, if you’re a by-the-book professional focused on metrics and strict deadlines, you may find working with a more laid-back creative-type more frustrating than fruitful.

Communicate Clearly

Keeping lines of communication open is crucial to a good working partnership. What makes great teamwork, though, is also being clear about how you prefer to communicate.

These days, many of us work remotely, and often asynchronously. We rely on email to keep us connected to our coworkers and clients, but there may be times when you need a different way to communicate. You may prefer the occasional phone call, or feel more confident with a regular in-person meeting. You may also find that an online meeting with screen sharing makes it simpler to talk through your needs. Be clear about what works best for you! This way, your creative teammate knows the best ways to connect with you.

Set expectations around availability. You may need someone who can share files or deliverables outside of traditional work hours. Make that expectation clear on the outset, so you don’t find yourself frustrated when you need something after 5pm on a Friday.

Deciding to work with a creative team can be daunting. But it’s a sign that your business is growing, so celebrate it! Remember your goals, your values, and your communication style—being clear on those will help you find your perfect match in a team.
The post Collaboration By Design: Tips for Better Creative Teamwork appeared first on Upswept Creative.

Even with the proliferation of messaging apps and social media platforms, email is still the preferred mode of professional communication. The average person can receive as many as 120 emails a day, with 99% of us checking our inboxes at least once daily.

That’s a LOT of communication. How much of it is truly effective, though?

There are plenty of resources out there about professional email etiquette, and I’m sure you already know about proper salutations, proofreading, and signatures. I’d like to focus on writing better emails, to bring more ease into your everyday communication.

Set Your Intention

Don’t worry: we’re talking effective communication here, not manifestation. Being mindful and intentional about the reason for your email can help you get to, and stay on, your point.

Most of your professional communications will involve asking questions and getting answers to items relevant to your ongoing projects. Be clear about your own objective for your email before you start writing it.

Questions to ask yourself as you draft your email: What’s the main thing I’m hoping to achieve with this email? What’s the main action I want my reader to take?

Having clarity around your intentions can help you get to the heart of the matter more quickly.

One Thing At A Time

You may feel compelled to stuff your email with numerous questions. I’m here to tell you: DON’T.

Yes, it may seem like a time-saver to load up on all the requests at once. But people’s attention spans are short, and their inboxes are full. Stay focused on the one main action you want your recipient to take.

You’re also more likely to receive a useful response. Folks tend to get overwhelmed by too many options, and may be less likely to reply–or send a response that doesn’t give you everything you need. If you really needed those answers, now you’ve got to follow up again. There goes the time you thought you saved!

A question to ask yourself here: how can I make it easier for them to take that action?

If there are several options, narrow them down to the two most effective responses. Make those options clear and concise. You may even consider a straightforward A/B format.

Remember: the goal is to keep things simple, and make it even easier for your reader to reply.

Less is More

Numerous studies suggest that the ideal length of an email varies between 50-200 words.

Of course, the intention of your email can help you determine if you’ll need more content to achieve your objective. While an email that’s too short may come across as terse or ineloquent, a too-long email may turn off your recipient from the get-go.

It’s also important to remember that many of us check email on smartphones. Between a smaller screen and the likelihood that someone is on-the-go, brevity can be the difference between getting a reply and getting ignored.

You’re already proofreading your email for spelling and grammar (you are proofreading, right?). Take another pass for directness.

Avoid cliches and overused words. No need for corporate word salad!

Remember your initial intention. What is the main action you want your reader to take? Does your email include all the information for them to take that action? Anything beyond that may be better suited for another send.

No matter what you do for work, you almost certainly don’t want to spend all day in your inbox! By taking a few extra minutes to bring thought and intention to the emails you do write, you can save yourself a wealth of time and frustration in the long run.
The post Write Better Emails: Tips for Effective Communication appeared first on Upswept Creative.

To say we’re living in interesting times is quite the understatement. It seems each day brings news of a new injustice, signs of economic instability, and public health challenges. If you run your own business, you may find yourself questioning much of what you’re doing these days. Should you be more vocal about current events? Is it even appropriate to promote yourself?

While you can’t necessarily stop what you’re doing, you can be more mindful and skillful about how you handle your day-to-day work in an unsettled world.

Stay Committed to Your Values

If you’ve been following us for any length of time, you know that we’re unafraid of sharing our values. Having clarity about the kind of world we want to live in helps inform not only the work we do, but the causes and organizations we choose to support.

Before you wade into the deep end of current events, take a moment to consider what you hold dear. Let those values inspire the actions you choose to take, and the public statements you may choose to make. If nothing else, this acts as a beacon to attract like-minded clients.

You Aren’t Responsible for Saving the World

Let me repeat: you are not solely responsible for saving the world. I do not say this to absolve anyone of their civic responsibility. We live in community; our actions do affect our neighbors, near and far.

That said: we each have our own “zone of genius.” We’ve all heard the adage, “too many cooks spoil the broth.” We can’t all be generals in an army of change. What can you contribute? Better yet: what do you realistically have energy to contribute? It will take all of us and all of our unique gifts to craft a better world. Do what you do, and do it well.

You Deserve a Break Today

The best way to do things well? Make sure you are properly rested!

We know the world of business runs 24/7, these days especially. That does not mean you have to be available all the time. You won’t be effective, in your business or your community, if you’re overworked and burned out.

Do what you need to do to keep your workday manageable. If you’re working solo, make sure to carve out time in your day for rest. If you’re fortunate enough to have a team, keep lines of communication open and assign tasks appropriately. Make sure everyone feels supported.

When I say “rest” here, I really do mean it! Doomscrolling social media doesn’t count, and certainly won’t help ease any anxiety. Take breaks from your devices to decompress. If you’re concerned about staying connected with your clients, schedule specific times to answer emails and engage on social media.

It’s Okay to Be Antisocial

We’re well aware of the importance of a social media presence. We love to champion the ease with which various apps and platforms allow us to stay connected with friends and fans alike. It’s equally important to focus the time you spend on social media on what matters most to you and your business.

As I mentioned earlier, scheduling time to connect with your folks online not only helps your engagement, it helps your mental and emotional health. Keep your online visits oriented towards your business.

If you do elect to follow news accounts and social justice-oriented content creators, be mindful of how you spend your time online, and be aware of how much it may be spilling over into your non-work time. It’s 100% okay to unfollow malicious accounts or those who peddle misinformation. You don’t need that kind of negativity in your life, online or off.

Truth is, we will always find ourselves living and working in an unsettled world. Take a breath (or three) and get yourself grounded. Remember why you do what you do and who you choose to serve. Let this be what guides you.

If you could use an assist to help with your online strategy, don’t forget we got you, friend.
The post No Business As Usual: Work in an Unsettled World appeared first on Upswept Creative.

As this year comes to a close, you’re likely to be inundated with a flurry of articles and think-pieces on business trends to consider. While we definitely see value in understanding social media updates and marketing trends in general, we want to draw your attention to more significant shifts in how we’ll do business, in 2022 and beyond.

(Just About) Everyone is Online Now

Once upon a time, online-only entrepreneurs were more exceptions than rule. In the wake of major changes in our economic landscape, more businesses have shifted to an online-heavy or online-only footprint.

According to the Census Bureau, over 4 million Americans filed paperwork to start new businesses in 2021. While this statistic does not necessarily translate to 4 million new online-only businesses, the rise of platforms like Patreon and OnlyFans does indicate rapid growth in the “Creator” sector.

That rapid growth also means more competition in the digital sphere. Which means your offering has to show up and stand out online.

Getting Anti-Social (Media)

Of course we’ll see exceptions to how businesses show up in the online space.

Remember the great Facebook outage of 2021? While it wasn’t connected to an increased number of users, we can say with certainty that more than a few small business owners felt the pinch of lost exposure, engagement, and sales.

We’ve talked before about ensuring you have more control over your digital audience. With concerns about security, privacy, and misinformation, there’s no time like the present to consider changing how you show up online.

Blogs, email newsletters, videos, and podcasts are all viable digital tools to introduce you to new audiences and keep you in touch with your tried-and-trues – all while allowing you greater control of how you engage with these folks.

If you can’t imagine doing business today without Instagram, remember that companies like Lush have already cut the social media cord! That could give you the nudge you need to rethink how you show up online.

Less Work, More Life

Let’s think about those 4 million-plus new businesses. You likely recall the myriad changes in our work worlds that gave rise to this influx of entrepreneurship. Mass layoffs and furloughs, as well as shifts away from in-person business, had many of us rethinking our notions of work-life balance.

Nowadays it’s not enough to pay lip service to ideas like family-friendly work policies and unlimited PTO. Workers want to know they’re being legitimately respected and cared for by their employers. If that isn’t the case… well, we clearly see they’re unafraid of striking out on their own.

If you manage a staff, there’s no time like the present to establish – and practice – workplace values that will help your business stand out. (Shameless plug: we actually know a pretty rad agency hiring right now!)

Before you get too stressed about adapting to all of the new trends on the horizon, keep in mind that not every trend will be as impactful or lasting as predicted. Some of those trends may not make much sense with how you do business, either!

We’ve said it before: it’s better to pick and choose what works for you than to try to be everywhere and do everything–and if you could make it work for you with some outside help, start exploring what that support could look like.
The post In With The New: Business Trends for 2022 and Beyond appeared first on Upswept Creative.

It seems a day doesn’t go by without an announcement from Instagram about supposed changes to their algorithm. It’s my (educated) guess that our small business owner friends lose too many waking hours stressing out about this mysterious algorithm, when their energy could be much better spent elsewhere… like on your Instagram analytics.

Good news: you don’t need any new tech or new tricks to understand Instagram analytics. You just need to know where to look.

Keeping your eyes on what’s working (and what isn’t) will help you create a smarter and stronger strategy – with the added fringe benefit of making the algorithm work for you.

What Do We Mean By Instagram Analytics?

When we talk about analytics, we’re going beyond the basics of your follower count, for example, or the number of “likes” on a post. Analytics uses those basic metrics to illustrate and understand patterns, and gives you insights on what content contributed to a gain (or loss) in followers.

On The Subject of Insights

Instagram offers Insights, a free tool that allows you to get a basic look at your analytics. This feature comes standard with Business and Creator accounts.

To access Insights, open the Instagram app on your phone and head to your profile. You should find an Insights button right there on your profile, or head up to the three bars in the upper right hand corner and click through from there.

The default view will show you an account overview for the last seven days. You can switch the view to analyze the last 14 days, 30 days, and the previous calendar month.

Okay, So What Are We Analyzing Here?

You can glean quite a lot of information about the overall health of your Instagram account from these basic insights. Here’s a quick rundown of what each of these key metrics and insights mean:

Accounts Reached – This indicates how many users saw your content, with a breakdown of how many are your current followers versus how many users aren’t already following you. If you’re interested in having a new audience interact with your content, this is incredibly useful information!

Content Interactions – This one says what it does right on the tin: how many interactions your posts have received in the given period, broken down by likes, comments, and shares. You’ll see these insights for all the content you share: posts, stories, reels, IG TV videos, and live videos.

Total Followers – This is another relatively clear metric, with a further analysis of how your account has grown or shrunk over the given time period. This insight also breaks down your followers based on locations, age range, and gender (please note: at this time Instagram only offers a binary look at gender). The real gem here? Insights will show you when your followers are most active. You can use this information to better plan when to schedule content for maximum engagement. (Another note here: since Instagram is based in California, the active times shown are in the Pacific time zone, even if you’re located elsewhere.)

Content You Shared – Now the party starts! Here, you’ll see a detailed breakdown of all the types of content you’ve shared, with the option to dig even deeper. Want to know how your carousel posts performed versus single images? You can do that! Want to see which posts got folks to click through the link in your bio? You can do that! Which posts did folks save most? You can look for that, too! Insights also gives you the ability to look for similar metrics with your stories and reels.

Make Analytics Work For You

You want to make the mystical algorithm work in your favor? Start with understanding why you want to use Instagram for your business. Increased brand awareness will require a different strategy than driving followers to sign up for a newsletter, for example. Be clear about why you’re showing up on the app, then share content with that intention in mind.

Take time on a regular interval (monthly, or quarterly at least) to dig into your Instagram Insights, and make adjustments accordingly.

Most of all: be kind to yourself, be patient with your strategy, and give yourself permission to have some fun!

Want to dig even deeper into your analytics and insights? Schedule a social media strategy session, and let’s make magic happen together!
The post Understanding Instagram Analytics appeared first on Upswept Creative.

In the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a Greenwich Village gay bar. It was not the first time this particular establishment suffered the indignity, but for whatever reason it was on that night that the Stonewall’s patrons – many of whom were Black and Latinx trans folks – decided enough was enough. Finally tired of being maligned, mistreated, and abused by police, patrons fought back against police.

One year later, gay rights groups in New York (and across the United States) marked the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising. Those early celebrations of gay liberation sowed the seeds for our modern-day month-long celebration of Pride.

These days, we’re more likely to feel the virtual unfurling of countless rainbow pride flags before we even flip our calendars onto the month of June. We can practically set our watches to the rainbow-framed logo updates across social media, and our ad feeds are suddenly resplendent with a kaleidoscope of Pride-themed clothing and merchandise.

This is a good thing, right? Our ability to spend our hard-earned dollars on items that allow us to identify ourselves as queer or queer-adjacent is surely a sign of progress!

Not so fast, friends.

Pride can’t be commodified

To put Stonewall into some context: though there were earlier examples of queer folks fighting back against police harassment (riots at Cooper Donuts and Compton’s Cafeteria are two notable events), much of the work around gay and lesbian visibility focused on assimilation and respectability. The overarching goal was fitting into heteronormative society, to “pass.” Fighting back that night at Stonewall prioritized fighting back against this notion of assimilation.

An annual celebration of pride, then, is a celebration of the myriad ways we show up in the world and how we love one another. We take to the streets in hopes of fearlessly expressing the fullest spectrum of humanity – an inability to pigeonhole us all into one way of being.

Much has already been said about rainbow capitalism – a phrase used to describe the commodification and commercialization of LGBTQIA2S movements. By its very nature, capitalism insists on a level of profitable conformity; make yourself fit a particular and palatable mold. Conflating the commemoration of a rebellion against gender-based harassment with a “buy this and show off your pride!” message is a perverse bit of irony.

No better time than now to resist commodification

As we celebrate the anniversary of this watershed moment here in 2021, we must also acknowledge the enormity of what we’ve all been through this past year plus. Between a global pandemic and a long-overdue reckoning with injustice and discrimination, we’ve once again had to rethink how we show up in the world, for ourselves and for each other.

I can relate to wanting some semblance of normalcy. Returning to the celebratory nature of Pride represents that, for sure. Falling right back into the monetization of Pride? Perhaps this is the year we say no. Perhaps this is when we truly honor our ancestors with reenergized efforts towards true equity and inclusion – not to mention true reform of law enforcement so that our community won’t have to take up arms and bricks against police harassment again.

Celebrate Pride, celebrate small, celebrate local

If you’re a small business owner, you might be asking yourself, “Okay, I see your points. But what’s the harm in joining in the Pride party? We sure could use some joy, and I want to show my support!” I get that! Any time we can elevate love and acceptance, we should partake.

We shouldn’t limit our commitment to equity and inclusion to a single day, week, or month. It’s okay to acknowledge days of remembrance, or celebrate fun hashtag holidays designed to feature unique members of our community. We also have the ability to reclaim our economic and financial power, in June and always. Independent and grassroots LGBTQIA2S organizations exist in your community; make sure they’re well-funded and supported year-round. Push back against token small donations from corporations to larger non-profits (where funds may not make it to intended recipients).

Beyond external measures, we have the ability to celebrate pride simply by showing up as our realest selves. While we will always acknowledge Gilbert Baker’s contribution to queer history, your celebration may be devoid of rainbow-hued anything. And that is equally as valid.

Happy Pride, friends – now and always.

Whether you’re brand-spanking new to business or you’re a well-oiled entrepreneurial machine, you likely know that the best way to stake your claim on our wild world wide web is to secure a domain name and build yourself a quality website. This way you’ve carved out a guaranteed space to share who you are and what you offer.

In an ideal world, securing your domain name and establishing your online home would be enough. In this increasingly virtual world, however, you’ve got a fair amount of competition.

Don’t fret, friends: if you’re already on social media, you’ve got an excellent tool at your disposal for driving traffic to your website.

What’s All This About Traffic?

Some useful statistics: there are approximately 3.5 billion daily active social media users. They tend to spend about three hours a day on social media. 54% use social media to make purchasing decisions, and 71% are likely to recommend a brand or business to friends or family after a positive experience.

Those are a lot of numbers to let you know that social media has the potential to drive relevant traffic to your website – if you know how to use it in your favor.

Style Your Profile

We often spend a lot of our time dwelling on the type of content we want to share on our social media channels. That’s a good thing, for sure – we want to position ourselves as experts in our respective fields, and we want to offer folks quality information that supports this notion.

Don’t forget, however: the time you spend priming your profile is just as valuable as the content you share. Whether it’s your Instagram bio or your Facebook About page, your profile gives people relevant information about your business. It’s also the ideal place to include your website link!

When people enjoy and appreciate the content you share, they’re likely to click through to your profile to learn more. Take advantage of that!

Keyword Research Is Your Friend

Here at Upswept, we’re huge proponents of smart search engine optimization (SEO) to help drive traffic to your website. Spend some time getting into the mind of your potential customers and how they might be searching for you online, and you just might discover a veritable treasure trove of high-quality copy for your website.

What’s even more awesome about this? You can use this same keyword research to create social media content! When you know what your customers are talking about, you can find the right way to share your wisdom and contribute to their conversations.

Circling back to using your profiles effectively: consider adding keywords to your profiles and bios. In the same way we use search engines to find businesses, we can also perform the same searches on social media. Including relevant keywords ensures your profile appears in those searches.

Keep It Social

You’re showing up online to promote your business. Your customers, however, are more likely online for the social aspect. They’re there primarily to stay connected with friends and family and enjoy entertaining, engaging content. Make sure the content you share provides the kind of value your ideal customers would enjoy.

Create posts around general topics related to your niche or area of expertise (and connected, of course, to your keyword research!). When folks engage with your posts, make sure to respond in kind. Not only will that engagement create a connection with an individual, it will show others who might land on your feed that you’re invested in your community.

Increased engagement helps boost your presence in the algorithm. Combine that with the positive reputation you’ve built with your followers, and you have a recipe for increased brand awareness – and increased eyes on your website.
